Interactive by default – RCS for Business Messaging pushes apps into the past

Sending RCS messages for business use is now supported in DNA’s network. DNA Wholesale is at the forefront offering RCS support to customers in Finland.

RCS for Business, previously known as Rich Business Messaging (RBM), enables businesses to send multimedia messages via RCS (Rich Communication Services) technology. RCS is a GSMA‑standardised messaging technology that has existed for years and is now gaining renewed momentum through broad platform support. This agile and secure form of messaging allows sending images and audio files to customers’ native messaging apps through the DNA RCS for Business Messaging service. RCS can be used to create interactive message threads that adapt to the customers’ choices. Through the service, businesses can currently reach Android users. Support for iOS is expected to be expanded in Finland at a later stage.

“RCS for Business messages have no character limit, and they can send audio and video. They enable outstanding customer communication better than ever before even though their key purpose is to make the customer’s life easier. Customers no longer need to be urged to download yet another app for various service providers. Instead, for instance, airline or train tickets can be delivered to the customer’s phone conveniently into the native mobile messaging inbox,” explains DNA Wholesale Sales Director Miia Heiskanen.

“RCS messages offer opportunities for creative, on-brand messaging. Suggested actions and replies, image carousels and other features – familiar from social media and previously missing from text and multimedia messages – encourage interaction and help create increasingly engaging user experiences,” adds DNA Wholesale’s Business Development Manager Carita Hinkka.

Advanced security and better data utilisation

RCS for business offers an alternative way to reach and communicate with customers. Earlier, consumers either had to download the service provider’s app to access, for instance, concert tickets they had purchased, or they would receive them via email or SMS. The pitfall of emails and text messages is a lack of reliability, as the sender might not always be who they claim to be. Thanks to RCS for business, companies can now register an RCS Agent, allowing the recipient to see that the sender is a reliable source. In addition, the encryption and security measures of operator-based RCS messages are more advanced than in traditional text and multimedia messages.

Sinch, a global communications platform provider and one of the leading players in RCS for Business, has expanded their dedicated partnership with DNA to advance RCS adoption for businesses.

“Today's customers expect richer, more interactive conversations, and through our valued partnership with DNA, businesses in Finland can now deliver that,” said Lisa Lundell, Vice President of Operator Relations for Europe and LATAM.

"Sinch collaborates with operators and our client enterprises to facilitate the transition to this new wave of customer engagement. Our APIs and turnkey applications provide RCS as a messaging channel, enabling businesses to establish effective connections with their customers.”

RCS for business messages also provide more interesting and actionable data for businesses. With traditional SMS messages, the sender receives no more than a read receipt, while RCS provides information on the recipient’s behaviour comparable to email marketing. Read times, click-through rates, and open rates are valuable metrics for measuring a company’s marketing success to help with optimisation.

A wide range of use cases

A distinguishing feature of RCS is the completely new customer experiences it enables. The messages are not only text but an entire service “environment,” such as a shopping site, event guide, maintenance service, or learning environment – directly in the customer’s native messaging inbox.

“There is a wide range of use cases: businesses can implement enriched product presentations, dynamic campaigns and real-time event communications without app installations or logins. RCS for business frees imagination for communication and opens the doors for more engaging and impactful customer encounters,” Hinkka elaborates.
