Safeguarding the data of telecom giants
Global telecom operators use Comptel software to analyse their data. DNA manages Comptel's business critical networks.
The Finnish software developer Comptel Oyj delivers software to global telecom operators to support their business processes. Founded in 1986, the company has nearly 300 customers in 87 countries, including América Móvil, China Mobile, DNA, T-Mobile, Telefónica O2, and Vodafone.
Businesses use Comptel solutions to increase the efficiency of their operations, create new services and convert network data to automate decision-making processes. "We have been doing this since GSM-era when we were connecting mobile switches into IT-services and running big data analysis software. Although we didn't call it as big data then," says CTO Markku Järvenpää with a smile.
Three years ago Comptel set out to look for a partner that could take responsibility for its global network solutions: MPLS networks, firewalls, and remote work solutions that offer secure access to the company's internal services.
"We used to partner with small businesses operating locally with expertise in different sectors, but the multivendor solution was difficult to manage," says Järvenpää.
"When people use video and network services for meetings, they need to rely on the excellent quality of those services. We also wanted to lower our costs on international calls by implementing IP-telephony services. It was important to us that we could buy a turnkey solution, because we didn't want to do heavy infrastructure investments."
Comptel chose DNA Business because of the proven track record of serving similar customers. "We found out that the list of potential partners was rather short."
"Trust is the key factor".
Co-operation between Comptel and DNA began with careful mapping of Comptel's requirements. Following that began a project where DNA built MPLS network to Comptel's Helsinki office as well as testing and configuring equipment that was sent to Comptel branch offices in various countries.
"All of this had to be as easy as possible for the people involved in our branch offices as they are not all IT professionals but a nominated person should be able to implement the solution. It's not economically viable to have professional installers travelling around the world doing the implementation."
"This business calls for a high level of trust between relevant people, and DNA has been an exemplary partner in this regard. Naturally, there are challenges in any business, and sometimes problems can be quite difficult to solve. However, DNA did everything they promised and the price for these services was what had been agreed upon," says Järvenpää.
Comptel has some of its largest offices in Helsinki and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Both locations employ about two hundred people, most of whom work in business critical product development. Reliable telecommunications are very important. If network and maintenance services fail, the company stands to lose money in reimbursements, not to mention its reputation as a reliable partner.
"We offer our customers 24/7 services, and this calls for our partners to offer the same," Järvenpää says.
"DNA has dedicated a person to manage our partnership, as well as a system architect with a deep understanding of how the infrastructure works as a whole. In addition, we need to be able to contact the Service Desk to solve practical day-to-day problems even on Christmas Day."
Working is now flexible
People in Comptel's organization are remote workers who sell, deliver and support the company's products. Often, they work remotely from cafés and at home. Mobile and safe remote working solutions are in high demand at Comptel. Comptel's CTO has a strong understanding of remote working needs and a clear vision of how the world will evolve in its use of remote services.
"I have been with Comptel for 15 years. I have travelled on business extensively, and while it's great to see the world, I'm happy we can work quickly together and not waste time, money and resources on unnecessary travel."
DNA is a competent Finnish teleoperator that works well together with large, international businesses. "DNA is large enough to credibly handle our business, but not too large – as we want to avoid bureaucratic processes. We require flexibility in our operations."
Järvenpää says balance is very important.
"We value a high level of data security, customers' privacy, operational efficiency and ease of use. Any partner of ours must excel in all of these fields."
