Faster connections in Finland and abroad
New technology has made our work life faster, freer and more mobile. Jukka Leinonen, the CEO of DNA, believes in the potential of new technology, as technology and devices rarely require the employee to be in a certain place at a certain time any more.
More than five million Finns live in areas covered by DNA's 3G network. The high bandwidth 4G network will soon provide coverage to 80% of the Finnish population. In the coming years, the objective is 100% coverage in Finland. There is no waiting around on DNA's network: data transfer rates are best-in-class and it is possible to watch HD films on the Internet without interruptions.
DNA signed a partnership agreement with Sonera to establish a joint network company named Finnish Shared Network Ltd. This company is responsible for building an entirely new joint mobile phone network in northern and eastern Finland to cover approximately 50 per cent of Finland's geographical area and approximately 15 per cent of the population.
Finnish Shared Network Ltd. will plan and implement 2G, 3G and 4G network connections in these areas, which DNA and Sonera will use to offer their own services to customers. This enables better coverage for mobile broadband and voice services as customers will be served by a significantly larger number of base stations in these areas. Additionally, the companies will combine the 800MHz frequency ranges that have been allocated to them for 4G networks in the operating area of the new joint venture, allowing higher bandwidths and a better service level in these areas.
Roaming is becoming more popular
Roaming refers to making and receiving calls, sending text messages and using data connections while abroad.

Our GSM 900/1800 dualband network and our 3G 900/2100 network offer a full service portfolio to our Finnish postpaid and prepaid subscribers, MVNOs on our network and our roaming partners globally. DNA's 4G network operates on the LTE 800, 1800 and 2600 frequencies and is already offering 100+ Mbit/s speeds nationally. In addition to that DNA is offering Cable TV and terrestrial DVB-T2 national HDTV network in Finland.
DNA is an excellent partner for parties seeking roaming connections in Finland because DNA offers its own, high-quality 2G, 3G and 4G network to customers of its roaming partners. In the future, customers will be able to enjoy the high-quality coverage of the joint network.
Speaking of high speed data, DNA had the fastest 4G network in seven of ten of the major cities in Finland when compared to Elisa and Sonera. According to the survey, DNA had the fastest average download speed for downlink, which was 46,6 Mbit/s. Elisa had 41,0 Mbit/s and Sonera's average downlink speed was 34,3 Mbit/s. The survey was conducted by Omnitele from January to February 2015.
DNA is expanding its roaming service portfolio to 4G roaming. This means that DNA's own customers roaming abroad, as well as customers roaming on our network, will be able to use fast data connections while travelling.
DNA's roaming services currently cover 176 countries and the coverage is continuously growing. Customers' data roaming needs are growing constantly. Data services are currently accessible with almost all of our partners but we intend to open a data service for use with all of our roaming partners.
"We are a great partner thanks to the coverage of our network, with reception everywhere in Finland. We are keen to talk to new parties about roaming opportunities," says DNA's Commercial Roaming Manager, Antti Koskinen.
