Fast connections enable new services
"We have the best fiber network in the Nordic countries", says TDC's Asger Hattel. The need for fast international connections is greater than ever, and fast connections can help customers in surprising ways. A new partnership between DNA and TDC creates a strong Nordic player, and benefits Finnish companies.
"We have more than 65 000 kilometers of fiber in the Nordics," says Asger Hattel, Senior Executive Vice President of TDC Wholesale and TDC Nordic. "It is the best fiber network in the Nordic countries."
TDC A/S is the largest telecom operator in Denmark with a strong presence in Sweden and Norway. Earlier this year Finnish telecom operator DNA acquired TDC's business operations in Finland.
Going forward, TDC and DNA are working together in a close strategic partnership. Finnish customers are benefiting from this collaboration at least in two ways: in faster connections and in business expertise. But why is the speed of international connections so important?

Fast connections enable new kinds of services
Fast connections are needed not only for videos, heavy graphics and other ever larger files that corporations are moving – often in to the cloud. Fast international circuits enable other kinds of new services, as well.
"One example is video conferencing services", says Hattel. With these services, people in different cities or countries can, for example, attend very realistic virtual meetings. "If you have video conferencing equipment, you need fast connections. At the same time, you are saving a lot in travel costs."
Modern business services are another example. Many corporations are requesting sub-suppliers to take care of their internal systems – often from abroad. These kinds of arrangements require fast international data connections.
"Our network consists of the Nordic fiber network and what we call the European ring. The Nordic network has high bandwidth circuits to London, Frankfurt, Paris and Brussels. In addition to that we have high bandwidth circuits to Finnish-Russian border", says Hattel.
"We are making sure that you are getting the fastest connections across the world".
"Full suite" of business expertise
The strategic partnership between TDC and DNA benefits Finnish companies in other ways, as well.
"We have more than 2 000 business experts – people working with companies every day – in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark," Asger Hattel says.
The strategy is to offer "full portfolio" of services. "Together with DNA we, can design your network, host and protect your data as a Nordic solution. We can do many things that companies' IT departments used to do in the old days", says Hattel. These include modern cloud and datacenter services.
DNA offers these services in Finland. When Finnish customers need fast international circuits or business critical services in the Nordic countries, collaboration with TDC can help them.
Will business travel become optional?
Hattel expects that interesting developments in the telecommunications will continue.
"We are heading towards more seamless way of working. Ideally no one should need to travel for business in ten years because companies will have so good connections for virtual presence", says Hattel.
"We are living very exciting times. A lot of interesting things are happening. I think that the telecom operators have the responsibility to avoid being just a price game. Our goal should be to offer more value to the customers."
