DNA to offer mobile TV network services

Press release 8 October 2009

From now on, mobile television will be available through the optimised DVB-H network. Initially, the service will be free for everyone. The mobile TV network is operated by Digita.

"The Digita MobileTV service complements our own range of services", comments Pekka Väisänen, Vice President, Consumer Business at DNA Ltd. "The use of the mobile phone is continuously diversifying. The image quality and reliability offered by the mobile TV network live up to consumer's expectations, making the service ready for commercialisation".

Offering TV services as a separate, dedicated network frees up 3G network capacities for other high-quality mobile communication purposes.

”The presence of a strong service operator is a precondition for creating both the market and a successful mobile TV concept in Finland, too. We are very pleased that DNA has decisively set out to offer consumers an expanding package filled with interesting contents. We also expect that the services will include pay TV services,” says Business Manager Taina Kaasalainen from Digita.

DNA will start in the mobile TV network by offering all viewers a free trial period. After this period, its television broadcasting will be encrypted and only DNA’s mobile phone customers will be able to subscribe to the service.

After the trial period, those who wish to continue with the service will pay the reasonable access fee. Customers who pay the fee will receive access to the most common television and radio channels, including YLE, MTV3 and SBS.

Mobile TV network within reach of more than two million people in Finland

More than two million people currently live within reach of mobile TV broadcasting. Optimised for personal and mobile use, the network covers the Helsinki metropolitan area as well as the cities and surroundings of Tampere, Oulu, Turku and Salo. Several major shopping malls have optimised their interiors for the reception of mobile broadcasts, among them Jumbo in Vantaa, Sello in Espoo and Ideapark near Tampere.

Watching MobileTV requires a DVB-H compatible device such as the Nokia models N77 and N96. Using the SU-33W adapter, the service is also available on the following Nokia mobile phones: N73, N79, N85, N97, E75 and 5800 XpressMusic.

The terrestrial DVB-H network (Digital Video Broadcasting Handheld) and its channels are administered by the Finnish network operator Digita.
