Press release 25 June
On 25 June 2009, the Ministry of Transport and Communications granted DNA an operating licence for high-definition television (HDTV) test broadcasts over the antenna network. DNA’s aim as an operating licence holder is to introduce new services for antenna-based residential customers and to challenge the traditional operators in the field. By expanding operations into the antenna network, DNA will assume a stronger role in the nationwide television services market.
The licence application forms part of DNA’s strategy to operate on a nationwide basis in selected business areas. Traditionally, DNA has been a strong regional player as a provider of cable TV and pay TV services. However, television services and terminal devices are developing at an extremely rapid pace, and future services will utilise different networks in diverse ways.
Expansion into the antenna network is a natural result of market development. At present, the extensive coverage of the antenna network makes it the most popular distribution network in Finland, and the launch of high-definition services will enhance its competitive ability markedly.
By launching network operations, DNA will also create a healthy competitive situation in the Finnish antenna network market, which will diversify the range of services provided for customers, and increase the amount of attractive high-quality content offered via the network.
In DNA’s view, the launch of high-definition television services opens up tempting business opportunities.
‘Because of price reductions, households have purchased a number of terminal device types with high definition capability but have not yet been able to utilise their potential and full set of features. Moreover, the market offers a wide range of high-quality HD content. As network operations begin, households will finally be able to enjoy unparalleled image quality. We are also confident that media houses will be satisfied with the introduction of new services and pleased with the launch of healthy competition in the market,’ comments Riitta Tiuraniemi, CEO of DNA Ltd.
