DNA's 4G network test delivers superb speeds and obtains valuable user feedback

Press release 6 October 2011

DNA's 4G network test in Hämeenlinna and Helsinki aroused considerable interest and provided valuable user insights

Test participants reported on the speeds they had achieved, the services they had used, and expectations they had of 4G technology. A substantial number expressed interest in using 4G services in the future, while some said that they were willing to replace their current fixed-line connection with 4G.

– We obtained useful observations and valuable comments from the tester. Our test network was put to good use, just as we hoped, stated Antti Jokinen, Production Director of DNA.

Watching TV on a computer screen, playing games over the Internet and working remotely emerged as top priorities on users' 4G wish list.

– Our testers want 4G to enable to work remotely in a public place or while travelling. HDTV on a computer screen was also popular among many users. Many testers said that they had shared their test subscription with family members, using a single 4G connection to simultaneously receive, for instance, network radio and high-definition video streaming. 4G is ideally suited for this kind of use. It was a delight to see our testers respond so enthusiastically to 4G's potential, Jokinen comments.

DNA's 4G network was temporarily deployed for test purposes in central Helsinki and some nearby areas. In Hämeenlinna, the 4G test network covered much of the town. A special test group was selected for the test, for the duration of which DNA provided testers with 4G subscriptions and wireless modems. At the same time, the company implemented a large-scale network project in Hämeenlinna, upgrading the entire local radio network, multiplying 3G network capacity and significantly enhancing 2G and 3G coverage.

DNA's 4G is an extremely fast, mobile broadband service for cellular networks, based on LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology. In 4G, real data transfer speeds can exceed those of ADSL broadband technology, based on conventional copper telephone lines and still in wide use.
